FOX26 News has been warning you about cryptocurrency scams. We talked with the FBI's Sacramento field office about how people can protect themselves.
It used to be that scammers would convince people to buy gift cards or make wire transfers.
Now, there’s an increasingly common trend of scammers using Bitcoin ATMs, sometimes convincing people to give away their life savings.
Nathaniel Le is a Supervisor Special Agent in the Cyber Investigations Department of the FBI’s Sacramento Field Office. He says that although blockchain technology does keep track of money transfers, the scammers are clever about staying anonymous.
“They will do a lot of things just to hide their tracks. They don’t necessarily go straight from there to a bank account,” said Le.
If you think you’re the victim of a scam, you should immediately contact your bank, your local police department, and your local FBI field office.
