Magnus Carlsen beat Alireza Firouzja in playoffs to take a 2-point lead over Praggnanandhaa into the final round of the FTX Crypto Cup in Miami. Pragg suffered the heartbreak of blundering mate-in-1 against Jan-Krzysztof Duda, but the 17-year-old still knows that if he beats Magnus in rapid chess he’ll clinch victory. Firouzja is out of contention, as are Liem Le and Levon Aronian, who beat Anish Giri and Hans Niemann.
The 6th and penultimate round of the FTX Crypto Cup saw the key title match-ups, Firouzja-Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa-Duda, go to tiebreaks, while the other two matches were decided in rapid chess.
