LITTLE ROCK (KATV) — The FBI is seeing an uptick in a new online scam that involves identity theft, computer intrusion, elder fraud, and cryptocurrency in northwest Arkansas, our content partner 40/29 News reported.
The scam begins with a pop-up link that provides a phone number to call for help, agents with the FBI said.
"You'll call that number and then at that point you're already talking to the bad guys," said Special Agent Kevin Corlew.
While on the phone, the scammer encourages you to transfer your funds into cryptocurrency.
"Once you transfer that money into cryptocurrency, it's gone," Corlew said.
He also gives advice to avoid these type of scams.
"Think about i before you're going to click on any link or call a number. Like think about the validity of what it could really be, and if you're unsure, you should ask authorities or call a legitimate company and verify," said Corlew.
